What's inside?
Lion's Mane (hericium erinaceus) mushrooms contain several phytochemicals that have been linked to various health benefits. Here are some of the key bioactive compounds:- Cognitive-Enhancing
Hericenones
Found in the fruiting body of the mushroom, these compounds have been shown to stimulate the synthesis of nerve growth factor (NGF), a protein that promotes the growth, maintenance, and survival of nerve cells. This could explain some of the neuroprotective and cognitive-enhancing effects associated with Lion's Mane.
- NGF (Neuroprotective)
Erinacines
Found mainly in the mycelium (the underground part of the fungus), erinacines also promote the synthesis of NGF. These compounds are generally considered more potent than hericenones in stimulating NGF. They may help with nerve regeneration and potentially slow the progression of neurodegenerative diseases.
- Immune-Modulating
Beta-Glucans
Like many mushrooms, Lion's Mane contains beta-glucans, a type of soluble dietary fiber that is well known for its immune-enhancing effects. Beta-glucans can stimulate the activity of macrophages, a type of white blood cell that engulfs and destroys invading microbes.
- Anti-Inflammatory
Polysaccharides
Aside from beta-glucans, Lion's Mane contains other polysaccharides that may have antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, immune-modulating, and even anti-cancer properties.
- Antioxidant
Antioxidants
Lion's Mane is rich in antioxidants, which help protect against cellular damage caused by free radicals. Oxidative stress from free radicals is implicated in many chronic diseases, including heart disease and cancer.
